Learn how to fly a drone step by step

This guide is a comprehensive tutorial for Drone Pilots that want to know how to fly a drone. The guide starts with the basics- what is a drone, and the different types of drones, then goes into specifics on how to fly a drone with various modes of flight and various camera views. The page also includes information about safety precautions and ethical considerations when flying drones.

What is a Drone?

A drone is essentially an unmanned robotic aircraft, that can be either pre-programmed or wirelessly directed by the pilot on the ground. The two main types of drones are multirotors and fixed wings (or airplanes). Drones come in all shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of portability (some can fit in your pocket), level of control (from fully autonomous to rudimentary), level of sophistication (degree to which they imitate flying creatures) and degree to which they resemble their animal namesakes (have you seen an albatross?). As technology advances, more customization options become available while at the same time becoming cheaper. There are even some kits out there that allow almost anyone to build their own drone from scratch!

Types of Drones:

MultiRotor (or Multirotor) – This is essentially a flying robot which uses multiple lift rotors. The most popular and advanced multirotor at the moment is the DJI Phantom which is 3-axis stabilized and has GPS guidance with an option to add autonmous flight control software for fully autonomous flight, both indoors and outdoors. Other examples include the Walkera QR Y100 hexacopter, Blade 350QX quadcopter or any of my earlier articles such as Syma X8HG Quadcopter. For more information on this type of drones visit my article on How To Fly a Drone.

Fixed Wing – As opposed to multirotors, fixed wing drones fly like airplanes or birds. The majority of fixed wing drones are used for aerial photography and videography, however they can also be used in applications where it is required to maintain a certain height and position (e.g. in forestry) and in some cases even stay stationary (e.g. for advertising purposes). Typical examples include the DJI Inspire 1 Drones, Walkera QR X800 Pro GPS Drone which has built-in GPS system with 8 kilometer range telemetry device, Yuneec Typhoon H Hexacopter Drone with 360 camera or 3DRobotics Solo Quadcopter Drone suitable for GoPro Cameras.
